Case Study
Southern Steel Group

Project Size:
2.64 MW Solar Rollout
Southern Steel Group, one of Australia’s largest steel distributors, partnered with Smart Commercial Solar to deliver a multi-site solar rollout across its national footprint. Since the first system was installed in 2020, the program has expanded to 21 sites, totaling 2.64 MW of rooftop solar. The rollout reflects Southern Steel’s focus on lowering operational costs, strengthening energy resilience, and reducing environmental impact across a diverse portfolio.
Sites: 21
Total Solar Deployed to Date: 2.64 MW
Estimated annual energy savings: ~$716,000
Estimated annual CO₂ offset: ~2,300 tonnes
THE CHALLENGE
With operations spread across Australia, Southern Steel faced high and rising energy costs across multiple facilities. Each site had different electrical infrastructure and logistical constraints, making it difficult to deploy a consistent solution without disrupting day-to-day operations. Coordinating a staged rollout with work across different regions required a partner with nationwide, proven multi-site delivery capability.
THE SOLUTION
Smart Commercial Solar established a dedicated program structure with consistent processes across states and local project managers working directly with site teams to minimise disruption.
“Our dedicated program heads oversaw the entire rollout, while our local project managers coordinate seamlessly with site managers to minimise disruption. That’s why companies like Southern Steel trust us to handle their portfolios,” says Ben Adamson, Head of Projects and Performance at Smart.
That trust has grown over time.

THE RESULTS
To date, 21 sites have been completed with a combined capacity of 2.64 MW, with the rollout continuing through 2025. An estimated 2,300 tonnes of carbon emissions have been avoided from the installed rooftop solar to date: the equivalent of taking 500 cars off the road each year.
“Southern Steel is exactly the kind of partner we love working with - forward-thinking, practical, and committed to long-term outcomes,” says Jon Vlatko, Chief Sales Officer at Smart Commercial Solar. “Managing 20+ systems across multiple states is no small task, but by aligning strategy with execution we’ve delivered a solution that’s both financially sound and scalable.”
